Who
has access to the discussion groups?
Students registered for our class have access to the discussion pages. You
must have the course reference and id to join the discussion area for our
course. You will need to protect your id and access information. We are
not responsible for lost passwords and any resulting harm.
I consider
discussions our opportunity to discuss and explore as a group. Having
our space protected from invasive outsiders is important to me and therefore
only registered participants will have the contact id and information
on how to join our discussion.
Why
should you participate in discussion?
In the on-line learning experience discussion is key to sharing, exploring
and learning. If you have not participated in an on-line class or discussion
group it may feel very uncomfortable until you get the jest of how discussions
work. The nice thing is you can think through your ideas before you hit
the send button. In an Internet-based course nonverbal language is the
primary means of communication. All contributions are valued and add your
opinions, ideas and knowledge to the group learning. When you participate
and engage you enter the conversation and add to the knowledge of the
group. Even if you feel you don't have anything to add or contribute,
you certainly do have your own opinion, idea or thoughts and have the
right to share and respond to the group discussion.
Discussion
on-line adds to the connections we make as a group. Posting questions,
reflections, insights, support, knowledge gives everyone an opportunity
to connect and learn together. Since our classes are brief, it is important
to participate on a regular basis and show - up for the discussions often.
How
do I participate in the discussion?
If
discussion on-line is new to you, I suggest logging into our program,
clicking through the different areas of our class and learn where everything
is. A fun area labeled - "Getting To Know You" is available
for you to play with posting and seeing how the technology works. If you
get stuck, notify me and we'll see what we can do to help you through
your learning curve. All students are encouraged to get familiar with
the tools we'll be using for our class early, so it doesn't interfere
with your learning and participation in our group discussion.
Remember,
the best plans fail and especially where technology is concerned there
will be opportunities to adapt. We are all learning together, so don't
be afraid to make mistakes and play. And a little bit of patience might
be helpful, especially if you are somewhat new to technology and this
style of learning.
What
if I make a mistake?
The best action is prevention. Take an extra moment to reread your content
before hitting the send button. Once you post the message it is there
for everyone to read. Good or bad, just know that our group discussion
is for learning and not being a perfectionist. We value the quality of
your ideas and overlook the mistakes, so post your message and move forward.
What
is appropriate behavior in the discussion group?
What would be appropriate in a traditional seminar or course? If we all
conduct ourselves in a manner that is conducive to learning (not offending
or abusive) and keep a light and lively discussion then we'll be fine.
Since a virtual classroom requires safety and trust, then it is important
to behave in a manner that is conducive to this kind of a learning environment.
Remember, in the virtual environment it is difficult for people to catch
your humor and inflections. So, be careful with humor and nuances of language
that might be viewed as insulting. Our group will develop its own dynamics
for what is appropriate for our group.
